Summary: Decent bike, but I'd reccomend the Schwinn Ridge AL instead
Date: 2008-10-29 -
Comment: I was looking for a lower end name brand MTB and came to the decision on this one after seeing it had dual disc brakes and what seemed like slightly better components then other Schwinns in its class. I knew however, that Schwinn bikes of this lower end type are all made in China by Pacific Cycle, so I wasn't expecting much. I had alreay been to Wal-Mart and Target and saw the Schwinns there, but they didn't impress me much.
Here are some good things to say about it:
- Dual disc brakes on a bike for under $250
- Slightly higher end SR Suntour shock than other Schwinns
- Decent Shimano Altus rear derailleur and SR Suntour front derailleur (hey at least both derailleurs are brand name)
- Front and rear rim quick releases
- Most pre-assembled parts were right and tight
- Plenty of documentation to adjust things (except for disc brakes)
- Packaged very well
- Nice color scheme and paint makes bike look beautiful
Now onto the not so good things:
- First and foremost, be prepared to spend HOURS tuning the brakes on this bike. Especially if you've never used disc brakes before. It's probably just because the "Radius Mech 7.0" brakes on this are about the lowest quality you can get (Google didn't even come up with the company name Radius). There are a few steps in the disc brake instruction sheet that are wrong too. After trying to adjust them for 2 hours, I finally disassembled the ENTIRE caliper assembly and started from scratch. The disc brakes work, but not as good as V-brakes!!! The brake handles will also sink all the way to the grips. There is no way to adjust this without the rotor scraping on the pads a little, which is very annoying. If I'd have known these disc brakes would be as much trouble, i would have went with V-brakes.
- No water bottle. WTH? Cmon.
- Tires look to be lower quality and skinnier than most TMB tires. They are not very knobby. Rims aren't fancy either. Might not be aluminum.
- While the shock on this bike is better than most on Schwinns in this class, it's still a spring one instead of gas and makes for a bit unnatural ride.
- Bike is heavier than the Schwinn Ridge AL. Probably a different alloy. Not allot heavier (about the same as most other Schwinns in its class) but makes it harder to get atop the roof racks.
- Combined V-brake and shifter mechanism makes upgrading one or the other impossible (and I was really wanting to upgrade the disc brakes).
- Seat is just uncomfortable
There is obviously more negative than positive about this bike. I really didn't want to spend hours tuning it, but once it's all tuned up, it's not horible. If you're looking at this bike for the dual disc brakes, DON'T. They suck plain and simple. Top quality mechanical disc brake setups only cost around $50 anyway. Hydraulic is awsome and would run around $120.
This bike does handle well and is fun to ride on the trails and cruising, but the disc brakes really ruin the bike. Basically, having bought my wife a Schwinn Ridge AL and assembling that at the same time, I would say go with that bike instead. I wrote a review on that bike too so check it out.
